Basics:
To access the R&D interface, click the DOFF icon below the mini-map, then click on the R&D tab.
To start an R&D project, click on any of the 7 R&D "schools" on the left of the interface, and click "Begin" on the item that you want to make (some items may not be visible immediately, scroll down to see more), and set the item to the version you want, and hit confirm. After you have your item setup, click "start task" to make the item.
I.E. to create a MK X Disruptor beam array, click Beams, Beam arrays, click on the items icon, click item disruptor beam array, click the MK button, click MK X, click confirm, click start task.
DOFF's:
To make R&D items, you will need the appropriate duty officers (DOFF's). The R&D interface will tell you what specialty the DOFF has to be, and will show you all the DOFF's that will work. Higher quality Doff's will give you a better chance to make higher quality gear.
Leveling:
To get to a useable level in R&D, you will need R&D experience (XP), you get XP from crafting items and from research projects. Research projects take 20 hours to complete and yield 6000 XP (base value), and crafting takes a variable amount of time and depending on the level of the item being crafted and yields XP proportionate to the time taken for crafting. Crafting yields approximately 10 XP per minute.
The most efficient form of leveling is to start a research project, then 4 hours of crafting after the project is done. This way, you have R&D going 24 hours a day.
Pitfalls to avoid:
Do not craft above a MK X item from normal crafting (i.e. not the special level 15 items), crafting MK XI or XII takes dilithium components.
Do not build high level items when when you have a low level in that school, you will get poor quality gear. The "recommended" level for crafting MK X gear is 15.
