BACKGROUND
N'ak'a'ai T'iala is a member of a little-known race that joined the Federation shortly after its inception, known by most humanoids as the N'ak'a'ai. It is customary for the N'ak'a'ai to use their family names before their given names, but their native language is so alien that no linguist or universal translator has thus far been able to learn even the most basic elements of the language. To help the other races of the galaxy, the N'ak'a'ai developed a far simpler language for use when off-world, including overly-simplified given names. However, to change the sound of their family names is considered a huge dishonor to their brood-families, so they all simply call themselves N'ak'a'ai when speaking to members of other species.
The N'ak'a'ai are all extremely tall & powerful - T'iala is actually considered quite short for her people (standing at 7'5"). They are also very long-lived - in fact, there has never been a N'ak'a'ai in their entire history known to have died of 'natural causes' or old age. T'iala enrolled in Starfleet Academy when she was a little older than 2'000 years old, & quickly showed a proficiency for leadership & combat duties.
T'iala's first duty assignment after graduation was as a security officer aboard the USS Halifax, an antiquated, underpowered Shi'Kahr class cruiser which was probably best suited to salvage operations. T'iala's time aboard the Halifax was unremarkable until 4-years later, when they responded to a distress call from a Rapier-class Frigate, the USS Juno, which was under attack from the Orion Syndicate. After repelling the first wave, T'iala was sent aboard the crippled Juno to help sweep the ship of intruders, but in her absence the Orions returned in force & caused heavy damage to the Halifax, killing her captain, all of the senior officers & bridge crew, & most of the junior officers in the process.
Ensign T'iala - now the senior-most officer of the Halifax left alive - took command from the Engineering deck & lead a brilliant counter-attack to drive the Orions off, & then proceeded to tow the Juno & her own heavily-damaged ship back to the nearest starbase, where she was recalled to Earth.
Upon arrival at Admiral Quin's office, T'iala was awarded Starfleet's highest accommendation for bravery, promoted to Lieutenant Junior-Grade, & re-assigned to the more advanced Rapier class Frigate they had just rescued, at the personal request of Captain Victor Farraday. It wasn't long before Farraday promoted her to a 1st-class Lieutenant & made her his Chief of Security.
T'iala's career followed a very similar path from that point onward, serving quietly for a short time on her ship until forced by circumstances to step into command & earning accommendation, promotion, & re-assignment to a more advanced ship closer to the front lines.
