------ FNN (Frontier News Network) Stardate 90169.11 ------
Good morning and welcome, this is RAdm Kritus tr'Mennes, Frontier Fleet Director of Public Affairs bringing you today's Frontier News Network Broadcast.
------ BREAKING NEWS ------
Frontier Fleet's Starbase, CentCom, came under attack by a variety of enemy forces at Stardate 90163.86, and a fierce battle for the defense of our base began, which lasted until Stardate 90163.97. A number of daring Frontier Fleet Personnel managed to hold back a fleet of ships from the Klingon Empire, but not before they were able to land boarding parties aboard the Starbase. Fleet personnel were dispatched to the lower levels of CentCom to repel saboteurs and Klingon Warriors bent on eliminating Starbase Personnel. The Klingon boarders were defeated and their fleet retreated after a long, costly fight in the bowels of CentCom. 14 personnel were injured, and 2 were killed. A memorial service will be held in memory of their sacrifice in the main concourse of CentCom on Stardate 90180.64. Please join us to remember our fallen comrades.
------ FNN's Spotlight on Staff ------
In more positive news, today we have a very special guest, VAdm Robert C. Graham, the Commander of Frontier Fleet!
FNN: Good morning Admiral, and thank you for agreeing to take time out of your busy schedule to be interviewed for the Frontier News Network broadcast today.
GRAHAM: My pleasure. I'm glad I could help.
FNN: How are you this morning?
GRAHAM: I'm doing great. Busy, as usual, but I've got a little bit of time to sit down with you, so it can't be that bad.
FNN: We'll get right into it then, first off, why did you join Starfleet?
GRAHAM: I joined partially out of an expectation from my family. Being a brat, I always knew I would end up in Starfleet, but growing up, it wasn't really what I wanted.
And then there was my dream... I had heard the stories about all the great captains in history. Johnathan Archer, James Kirk, Matt Decker, Rachael Garett... I didn't want to become a starship captain. I wanted to be the Captain. Skip all the boring parts like the Academy, promotions, and all the hard work and jump right into the center seat. *laugh* Luckily for my crew, it doesn't exactly work that way.
FNN: Your father was a non-commissioned member in Starfleet, I imagine he was very proud when he pinned that first pip on your collar?
GRAHAM: Yes. I like to I imagine that he died a happy man. He was only a Chief Petty Officer when he retired. My dad... he was the kind of person who dove into everything he did with so much intensity. You know, he was the only non-com in the entire Engineering Department at the Odyssey Complex? He didn't live to see the Enterprise-F launch but every time I talk to Captain Shon, I think about him.
FNN: Aside from the founding of Frontier Fleet, what would you say your greatest accomplishment is since joining Starfleet?
GRAHAM: Oh, I don't know. Maybe meeting Jorel Quinn or stepping onto the bridge of the Gawain for the first time. Truth be told, I don't feel like I've earned any of the praise that I'm given credit for. I mean, none of it would have happened without the captains I've worked for and the crews that have worked for me. My name is on the reports, but really... everything I've done, the credit goes to them.
FNN: Were you ever sent on a mission that challenged your beliefs in yourself or our organization?
GRAHAM: *sigh, nodding head slowly* I don't like being kept in the dark. When things aren't black-and-white. I've had to deal with certain classified organizations. Of course, I did my job... but not knowing who I can trust or why. It's not easy to wake up in the morning. I'm sorry, that's about all I can say.
FNN: Why did you form Frontier Fleet?
GRAHAM: *laughs* It wasn't really my decision. Starfleet Command decided that we had too many resources devoted to Gamma Orionis and the Klingon Front had a large operational hole. Naturally when Admiral Quinn contacted me, I was given quite a bit of leverage in fleshing out the details of the organization and it's operations. I guess I formed the fleet in that respect... But, at least at first, it was just another assignment.
FNN: What do you feel is the greatest aspect of Frontier Fleet?
GRAHAM: Our dedication. Every one of the ships assigned to Frontier is commanded by the most exemplarary officers I could ever have imagined. I mean, take a look at CentCom, for instance... It's barely been six months since construction of our Starbase began and already we're nearing the first Tier of completion. A full year ahead of schedule. Except for the Third and maybe Ninth Fleets... show me anyone who's been more successful in such a short amount of time.
Our dedication and heart... yeah, that's the best thing about the Frontier. I'd imagine that if Ambassador Picard hadn't retired, he would want to be here with us.
FNN: Do you ever have doubts regarding the fleet and its viability?
GRAHAM: No. Absolutely not! For every setback we see, there are ten teams of the most amazing officers working on that problem. The Frontier will be around for a very, very long time. You mark my words.
FNN: What are your plans for the short term and long term future of the fleet?
GRAHAM: Short term... complete construction of CentCom, maybe establish fleet detatchments on some nearby Federation colonies to help strengthen our border with the klingons.
Long term... I would like to get back out into deep space. I haven't been exploring the unknown in a very, very long time. Our officers, especially the younger ones, deserve the chance to have that same experience.
In fact, the U.S.S. Caliburn is undergoing a refit. When it's recomissioned, it's scheduled to be assigned to the Frontier for that express purpose.
FNN: If you could change one thing in the galaxy, what would it be?
GRAHAM: The laws of physics... does that count? No, I guess not.
One thing that I would change? Probably the aging process. I'm not as young as I once was.
FNN: And lastly, retirement. You've had a pretty long and distinguished career, and while I am sure you have a number of good years left, when you do retire, what are your plans?
GRAHAM: Ooh... Earth, Risa, Ba'ku, P'Jem... any number of places. I really haven't put any serious thought into it. But some place temperate--of that I assure you. I can't stand the hot or cold. I have to be comfortable if I'm going to live out my senility somewhere.
FNN: Thank you Vice Admiral, I am sure this insight into the man behind the rank will be very well received by our readers! Next broadcast's SoS (Spotlight on Staff) will be RAdm Janus, Frontier Fleet's Director of Logistics, where we'll talk about some of the things she does behind the scenes to keep Frontier Fleet running smoothly, as well as touch on the controversial new Personal and Ship Equipment Aquisition Regulations!
